Abracadabra! It Worked!!!!!
I bought this book for my daughter a few weeks into her flute lessons. Being a begginer she was slightly unconfident. This book is just magical in its simplicity and after only a couple of months she is managing some lovely tunes. The book contains exercises that are good for begginers building confidence and more experienced players building precision. It manages to deliver rather difficult lessons into a student and tutor friendly manner.

Abracadabra Flute: Pupil’s Edition
This publication is an essential guide for beginners. With it simple step by step guide, it shows how easy it is to start playing the flute. The diagrams show how to play the different notes, holding the flute the correct way, guidance to playing simple songs helping you to achieve the satisfaction of playing with confidence. My daughter is following this book and in two months has gone from a complete novice to playing the tunes in this book with ease. Don’t just take our word for it, try it yourself and find out how easy it is to start learning on how to play the flute.

An ideal book from begginners onwards!
This music book is perfect for somebody just starting to learn flute. It includes many well known, catchy tunes which are easy to learn. Additionally, it includes instructions on how to play different notes. It progresses to fairly difficult tunes meaning that the book will last a long time and will never become boring. I have enjoyed practising from this book (and older editions) for several years, and would highly reccomend it for any new flautist!

Well presented, easy to follow.
In my opinion, this is a very good buy for those who are looking to learn the flute, for both young and old, with or without additional instruction, although, I would recommend it, for technique purposes and additional support, especially for young learners. It takes you through the basics of finger positioning, how to support the flute and proper lip postioning, with good pictoral diagrams. Also included is a good basic explanation of music theory, which progresses with each unit, good excercises, basic scales and ‘concert pieces’, along with several duets to be played with a teacher or someone more advanced in playing the flute. More importantly, it does not progress too quickly. There are also very good hints and tips on each unit on both playing and reading music, and a basic finger chart is also included as a handy quick reference.

A masterful work
Everything you ever wanted to know about playing the Irish flute and tin whistle. It’s as if the author has poured several lifetimes of experience into the writing of this book. Carefully organised with everything from information on getting started, the pros and cons of various types of flutes and whistles, to playing technique and interpretation. The notation is clear and unambiguous without being overly fussy, and the accompanying CD provides useful audio illustration of key points. I particularly enjoyed his parallel notation of some tunes to help explain the use of variation within a melody. I’m a fiddle player myself, and found Larsen’s in depth information on ornamentation and playing style invaluable. It’s even inspired me to take up the whistle!

Superb, Incredibly Comprehensive
As a classically trained flute and recorder player, I’ve dabbled with irish music and the odd ‘penny’ whistle. But somehow it never quite sounded right. Now I know why! This book is outstanding, and should have been called ‘The Complete Comprehensive Guide’. It covers all aspects of practicing and playing irish music on the flute and whistle, as well as a history of the music and comprehensive notes and transcriptions of tunes from the masters like Matt Molloy.
The section on ornamentation (the ‘twiddly bits’) covers 160 pages and is frankly astonishing. Every possible type of musical embellishment is detailed with examples, careful description and exercises, all accompanied by demonstrations on the accompanying CD. The CDs are a good example of the thought and attention to detail - some tracks contain a metronome to help you maintain the ‘pulse’. This has been recorded on one stero channel whilst the flute plays in the other so you can adjust the balance between the two as you wish when practicing!
I paid £35 for this book in a London folk music shop and it was worth every penny. I have hardly put down my whistle since buying it. I can not recommend it highly enough for anyone serious about playing irish flute of whistle music.

Simply Great!
Summary: Practical, informative and fun!

If, like me you have ever felt an urge to play the flute, but never never felt you could justify spending several hundred pounds on a ‘real’ one; this is the book for you!

The Authur provides all the information necessary for you to make your own flutes from cheap and readily available materials.
The book also contains invaluable information and help on the techniques required to blow your first note, and the fingerings you need to be able to play a scale.

Detailed instructions are provided to make the ‘plumbers Pipe’, which is very simply constructed from plastic tubing, which is readily available from any D.I.Y. store. I made my First ‘Plumbers Pipe’ in less than two hours, and played my first notes within minutes of finishing It!

In conclusion: the book is well laid out, easily understood and the authors freindly, lighthearted style makes reading it a pleasure.

Thoroughly interesting and helpful book for flutists
As a competent musician but a newcomer to the flute world, I was shocked to find the amount of snobbery and mystique that surrounds the flute, both of which discourage the new flutist. This book avoids this completely. Every bit of advice offered by the book is useful and helpful with exactly the right balance between musical, historical, technical and mechanical content. The book takes you from choosing a flute, how the flute is made, how it works, how to hold it, how to blow it, how to practice, right through to details like how to give recitals. There are few diagrams but I found this no disadvantage because the text is clear and unambiguous. An excellent book for people like myself who are already musicians and who want to get up to speed quickly on a new instrument. I also thoroughly recommend the book to beginners and intermediary players, and advanced players may well find the book very interesting as well. Probably not suitable for children due to the number of words, but this should not deter adults because the book is well written and is a quick and easy read. Even as a softback it is excellent value. Since the content is good, I would have preferred to have bought a hardback version (if available).
